Types Of Puffball Mushrooms

Types of puffball mushrooms
Toxicity. For most people, puffballs are edible as long as they are uniformly white inside. However, death and serious illness have resulted from eating egg stages of a death cap (Amanita phalloides) or earthball (Scleroderma species) after mistaking these for puffballs8.
Are all puffballs poisonous?
Most puffballs are not poisonous but can resemble young poisonous mushrooms such as the death cap. True puffballs are edible when immature but any spore can cause digestive upset if consumed and caution should always be taken as some fungi are highly poisonous.
How can you tell a puffball mushroom?
Puffballs look unlike most other types of mushrooms since they don't have gills, the young ones are solid spongy balls growing from the earth. These mushrooms are relatively easy to spot, since they can be quite large, round, and white. They tend to stick out against the green grass they grow in.
